Bao: To wrap; as in Da Bao, Doggie Bag. pronounced "bow" as in Chairman Mao
Jiaozi: Dumplings as in picture below. prounced gee-ou-zuh...said fast
The Li's invited to have dinner with them. First we went to their home theater and spent an hour doing Karaoke. That was a blast. Then it was time to make the dumplings. Some dumplings were filled with meat and others with vegetables, including pumpkin. The grandmother, the woman in the dark green shirt, showed us how to stuff and pinch them. The trick to sealing them is to hold them with both hands and give them a good solid pinch. I was a very poor student in that area, but my many years of making lefse made me an ideal dough roller. That's one of the Li daughters with the rolling pin in the above picture.
One tray of jiaozi...we made many, many such trays. From this point they went into big kettles of boiling water. We ate them in bowls with chop sticks. Hah! Slippery little buggers. For flavor we added soy sauce or very strong vinegar What didn't get eaten that night went in the freezer.
This video may never play but is is Cathy thanking the Li's for a fabulous evening. She sang an Irish song for them. Then they brought her a guitar and we had a little sing-along before saying good-bye for the evening.
